Snow Conditions

POWDER SNOW ZONE ON THE COAST.

We have three main operating areas sandwiched between the inlets of the Pacific Ocean and the high mountains of the Monarch Icefield and Chilcotin Plateau. Technically we are 150 to 200 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, and therefore, are in a perfect location to receive one of the deepest snowpacks in the Canada. Ocean Falls has the highest reported precipitation for Canada and at the eastern edge of the Bella Coola Valley, there is approximately 2/3 less. Our operating zone is right in-between these two extremes.

Very uncoastal, cold, dry powder falls our alpine areas due to the proximity to the Chilcotin Plateau more than 70 km to our east. This plateau is where you can expect more inland winter weather patterns with temperatures below that of our operating area. This colder influence off to the east combines with warmer, Pacific air to give dry conditions in the high alpine and plenty of snowfall. Where we ski, the coldest winter temperatures are known to be between -15 to -20. Combine our northerly location with plentiful glaciers and regular snowfall ... and it all adds up to remarkable snow in the Central Coast Range.

Unfortunately there are no guarantees when it comes to the weather. The week you choose could be the best of your life or it could turn out to be a frustrating experience that does not live up to your expectations. Temperatures could drop to a bitter -25°C or it could rain to the top of the mountains. These are the factors beyond your control and ours.

We have numerous skiing and non-skiing activities to do during your tour - probably more than any other operator in Western Canada. These include:

  • Natural hot springs
  • Fly-fishing for BC salmon (if in season, with proper licenses)
  • Hikes to ancient petroglyphs with a First Nations guide
  • First Nation and local art gallery visits
  • Water skiing and sea kayaking (boat tours only)
  • Visit to see the world's largest Western Red Cedar
  • Beach comb in the world's largest temperate rainforest
  • Shop for local seafood and crafts
